So many wheel and tire choices, what's right for the rig?

February 7, 2024

Don't we all want to take our next overlanding trip with a capable and completely built out rig as the GX460 shown above? We sure do here at Offroad Option! (@gxor702) It's definitely nice to have beefy tires and cool looking wheels to improve on two aspects of our overlanding rigs, capability and looks.

With so many off road wheels and tires available, it does get overwhelming when selecting the right set. Our goal is to assist you on selecting wheels and tires with our customized curation, it is as easy as ordering your coffee through drive-thru.

Vehicles

4Runner in dirt

Overlanding vehicle does not mean it should be fully built as (@adam.built) 4Runner, although we gotta say his 4Runner is drool worthy. Well, for us, it's a basic '98 100 series on 35s.

No matter the vehicle, getting to and back from a serene overlanding trip with family and friends is the goal and dreams throughout long weekdays.

Even if it is an easy trail that can be tackled by stock-ish SUV/4x4, once you take off road option for camping trips, it's hard to return to regular campsites.

Well, maybe that's just us...

Wheels

So, what wheels to get? Is it strictly aesthetics? Which brand? Does it fit my truck? Yes, we understand the questions can go on and on.

  1. Let's cover the basics first, your wheels should be round! All jokes aside, with inexpensive replica/knock-off wheels available everywhere, it can be challenging to chose the right set of wheels. Most aftermarket wheels that comes from reputable brands carry lifetime structural warranty and are rather robust. This is why we carefully hand-picked brands and styles that's been proven.

  2. There are a lot of aftermarket wheels that are not friendly once you start hitting the trails. Such as mall-crawler setups. There is nothing wrong with those wheels but they are not a good fit for us. For the vehicles that are actually hitting the trails will be better off with smaller diameter wheels that gives room for more meat on tires. This gives you comfort in rough surfaces and better protection for the wheels by having taller sidewalls.

  3. Offset. This is where things get complicated. Offset determines how much your wheel would poke or be sunken in from your fender. It's a fine balance of clearance. There are other key factors such as; lift, tire size, alignment spec, vehicle weight, tire pressure, and exterior mods that dictates if the setup will fit or not. Our guide is set for most common fitments per vehicle.

  4. Personalize. Yes, your OE wheels can be outfitted with bigger A/T and M/T tires, there is nothing wrong with upgrading tires with stock wheels. If your OE wheels are 20 inches or larger along with street tires, it would not hurt to drastically change the look by upgrading wheels and tires. You can choose from military, Baja race truck look, or functional bead locks and more.

All the wheels we offer are hand picked by our team and you won't find any mall-crawler specs and options in our selection.

Tires

Nitto Tires

Tires, Tyres, Llantas, Rubber, Donuts or whatever you call them, just like aftermarket wheels, there are so many sizes and brands to choose from. Did we mention that they are expensive? Moreover, unfortunately, these donuts wear out as we travel. So, before committing to one of the most essential part of the build, the norm has been searching countless hours on the forums, what fits?! Lucky for you, we have done your homework and took out the guessing game.

As mentioned, wheel offset, size, lift, alignment, exterior mods, and more things dictate if a tire would fit your rig or not. If you are uncertain about our selections, we are just an email away from helping you find the perfect setup for your adventure.

Conclusion

The daunting task of selecting right setup should be as effortless as clicking through our presets. Offroad Option team is here to help you find the right setup for wheels and tires.
